Illustrating the Patient Experience
Daniel Golden, MD, MHPE, is empowering patients with cancer through a series of discussion guides that explain external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and gynecologic high-dose rate brachytherapy using graphic narrative. An associate professor in the Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology at the University of Chicago, Dr. Golden conceptualized the Communicating the External Beam Radiotherapy Experience (CEBRE) series and partnered with Professor Tomoko Ichikawa of the Illinois Institute of Technology Institute of Design to find the best design solution to execute his vision.
A combination of drawings and text written at a sixth-grade level help facilitate conversations between providers, patients and caregivers about what to expect during radiation treatment. "These graphic narrative images are designed intentionally to have just enough detail to help patients understand what's going on without being intimidated," says Dr. Golden.
Dr. Golden and Professor Ichikawa wanted to build on the success of the initial CEBRE guide, which provides a general overview of EBRT, by developing guides tailored for some of the most common cancer sites treated with radiotherapy. In 2019, the team received a Personalized Radiation Therapy grant from the Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) to support the creation of three new CEBRE guides that are customized for patients with breast, lung and prostate cancer. Any provider can download the guides for free and print them on a standard office printer.
To date, the CEBRE, CEBRE en Español and Communicating the Gynecologic Brachytherapy Experience (CoGBE) guides have been downloaded more than 400 times. Dr. Golden's team will develop three additional site-specific CEBRE guides for head and neck, central nervous system and gastrointestinal malignancies to be released in late 2022 with continued support from the ROI.
You can play a role in developing helpful tools like CEBRE and advancements in radiation oncology by including a gift to the ROI as part of your future plans. Contact Janet L. Hedrick at 703-839-7340 or roi@astro.org to learn more.
